"On Friday August 15th, ShoXC veteran Jaime Fletcher returns to the cage. Jaime, a fighter who competes at both 185lbs and 205lbs, will have his second fight in a row at the light heavyweight division.
Fletcher successfully passed his first test at this weight in the upset victory over Aaron Rosa. This time, he faces international veteran Cyrille "the Snake" Diabate, who is looking to make a successful North American debut.
ProElite.com spoke to Jaime Fletcher about the fight, and learned his intentions for Diabate and beyond.
Q: What do you know about your opponent?
Jaime: I know that he's a pretty good kickboxer who's been training a long time... Has a Muay Thai background, and I'm assuming since he's from France, he's probably got some Savate too. He's long at 6'6", and I've seen a little bit of him grappling in fights so I know he know's what's up with the ground game. You know, a lot of people are quick to say that "you fight somebody with a striker, that's all they got", but I know he's got a little something on the ground too.
Q: You mentioned the length, what are you thoughts on dealing with the length advantage Cyrille brings to the fight?
Jaime: I spar with big guys all the time. Tall guys, people who weigh more than me. For example, I train with Josh Barnett--he's like 6'4" or 6'5", and I've sparred tall people in the past. So I understand about range & getting inside.
A lot of the time when I start working my game plan, that takes away a lot of the things that other people who I fight who are taller and longer than me like to do.
Q: How do you see this fight going?
Jaime: Honestly? I'm going to end it quick. I'm not trying to have no damn three round war. I want to serve this fool up real quick then get out of there and have a drink.
Q: This fight will be at 205lbs. As a fighter who competes at both the 185lb division as well as 205lbs, talk about your decision to fight at light heavyweight.
Jaime: At this weight I don't have to cut & I'm usually a lot quicker than the opponents I face. I'm comfortable at the weight and I think the way that EliteXC is set up right now that it's a good opportunity for me to take advantage of and try to get a title shot out of it.
Q: Now, one has to assume that Cyrille Diabate is coming to ShoXC and one has to assume he's looking to make a successful North American debut. What are your thoughts on that.
Jaime: Obviously, you don't want to come over here and lose. But, what is dude doing coming over here anyways? He's 36, he's old, he's fought in Cage Rage and Pride and everything, and now he's trying to fight in Showtime? This is my league. I'm going to have to give this dude the business.
Q: Is there anything else you would like to say?
Jaime: After this fight, I'm really looking for a title shot. Also, they need to start putting me on the poster too, or I'm gonna start fighting people at ProElite. "
